dr. myron allukian Jr., A60, received the first Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Association of Community Dental Programs at the National Oral Health Conference in Los Angeles on May 5. The award has been renamed the Myron Allukian Jr. Award and will be given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions for better oral health in the United States. Allukian is the director of the Oral Health Program for the Boston Public Health Commission.

susan decker, A84, the CFO of Yahoo!, has been named to Pixar Animation Studio’s board of directors—the first dot.com executive to join the groundbreaking animation studio. The Pixar studio, which revolutionized the use of computer-generated animation, created such hits as Toy Story (1995) and Finding Nemo (2003). At Yahoo!, Decker manages all financial and administrative activities for the company, which is the world’s leading Internet brand.

bill glaberson, A74, a court reporter for the New York Times, won the Crystal Gavel Award for outstanding reporting of the delivery of justice within the legal profession and the courts. The award, presented jointly by the New York State Bar Association and the New York Press Club, was given for Glaberson’s article “Lie or Die”—the story of a 21-year-old Bedford-Stuyvesant man who witnessed a murder and was killed on the eve of the trial at which he was to have identified the killer.

carlos gutierrez, A98, won HBO’s First Annual Latino Filmmaker Competition. Beating out 160 others, Gutierrez received a $15,000 grant to produce and direct a five-minute film based on his script Lechon. The film, whose title means “pork,” tells the story of a boy who accidentally wanders into the home of an old hog butcher and learns lessons that change his life. Lechon debuted at the New York Latino International Film Festival.

robert lee holtz, A72, G73, a Pulitzer-prize winning science writer for the Los Angeles Times, received the Society of Professsional Journalists 2003 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Excellence in Journalism for a series of stories on the space shuttle Columbia accident. The society gave its non-deadline reporting award to the six-part series “Butterfly on a Bullet,” published in the Los Angeles Times. The series also was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in feature writing.

randy newsom, A04, signed with the Boston Red Sox. While at Tufts, Newsom, a pitcher, had a Jumbo career with a 18–7 record, 3.05 earned run average, and 165 strikeouts in 209 1/3 innings. He joined the Gulf Coast Red Sox in the Rookie League. The team plays their home games in Fort Myers, Florida.

walter wriston,, F42, H63, former CEO of Citicorp, was honored by President Bush with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Wriston, who led Citicorp and Citigroup from 1967 to 1984, has been credited with helping to launch the age of electronic banking. During his tenure at Citicorp, Wriston was one of the first to pioneer the use of automatic-teller-machine cards. When he retired in 1984, Citibank had become the world’s largest bank.
