Book readings The Friends of Tufts Libraries launched their new "Authors Talk" series on October 5 with a reading by English Department Chair Jonathan Wilson, from his novel The Hiding Room. At least one "Author Talk" will be held in each of the libraries on the Medford, Boston and Grafton campuses, with each featuring a member of the Tufts faculty, or an alumnus, who is recently published.

Tufts books make "Best Books of '90s" The readers of Lingua Franca, one of the leading magazines of higher education, chose two books by Tufts authors for their list of the "Best Academic Books of the '90s." While more than 300 titles were submitted for consideration, only ten were chosen. Among those were, at number six, Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life (Simon & Schuster, 1995) by Professor of Philosophy Daniel Dennett, and at number ten, The Radicalism of the American Revolution (Knopf, 1992) by Gordon Wood, A55, a Tufts trustee and Pulitzer Prize winner.

Dubus' novel best of year, says Oprah Andre Dubus III, a lecturer in the Department of English, continues to receive high praise for House of Sand and Fog (W. W. Norton, 1999). A finalist for the 1999 National Book Award for Fiction, the novel was also picked for the Oprah Winfrey Book Club. The book, says Winfrey, was "my favorite read this year." Dubus is no stranger to recognition for his writing; his awards include a Pushcart Prize and the 1985 National Magazine Award for Fiction.
