Tufts club and alliance events for September, October and November

BOSTON Among those alumni participating in the Boston Tufts Alliance's annual Summer Red Sox outing on August 23 were (l-r) Amanda Schrechengaust, J98, Julia Motl, J98, Carolyn Cohen, J97, Peter Sanborn, A99, Yukiyo Iida, J99, and Gina Beck, J97. The rain delay, which lasted more than three hours, didn't dampen the spirits of the Jumbos in attendance.

NEPONSET VALLEY The Neponset Valley Tufts Club met on September 24 at the Via della Chiesa Vineyards in Raynham, Massachusetts, to enjoy a variety of wines and refreshments. The group, which included some future Jumbos, also took a tour of the facility. The event was so enjoyable, they plan to revisit the winery again next year according to Bessie Papas, J46, coordinator of this event.

NEW HAMPSHIRE On October 13, more than 70 Jumbos from all over New Hampshire gathered at the Wayfarer Inn, in Bedford, to hear a presentation by Professor Jodi Magness,Tufts Department of Classics and Art History, who conducted an excavation in the Roman siege camps in the summer of 1995, in which Tufts students participated. The lecture, Masada: Last Stronghold of the Jewish Resistance, was well received and was one of the largest turnouts in years, according to Florence Goldman, J38, leader of the Club.

MICHIGAN This past September, the re-energized Michigan Tufts Alliance brought together alumni, parents, family and friends for a day at the new Comerica Park where the Red Sox took on, and beat, the Tigers, 8 to 5. Jumbos met prior to the game at the Big Cat Court for a picnic and to socialize. Jan Alpert, J84, event coordinator, wrote us that there was a good combination of schools, years and parents. There was also a lot of excitement about future events among the alumni who attended. Let's plan the next event!

CONNECTICUT On September 24, about 85 alumni and friends from the Connecticut Tufts Alliance met at the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, Connecticut, to hear Professor Barbara Ehrlich White, Tufts Department of Classics and Art History, speak about impressionism. The talk focused on the personal connections among several of the best-known impressionist painters, including Renoir, Manet, Cassatt, Degas and Pissarro, and how they influenced each other's styles.The Hill-Stead was designed by and was the residence of one of America's first female architects, Theodate Pope Riddle, and today the museum is set up very much the way it looked when her family lived there. Nick Merritt, A80, wrote to tell us that the event was a huge success.

WASHINGTON, D.C. The Washington Tufts Alliance spent a wonderful evening at the Costa Rican Embassy hosted by His Excellency Jaime Daremblum, Ambassador from Costa Rica. Jumbos received a warm welcome from the staff of the embassy and dined on exquisite food and wine from Costa Rica. Guest speaker Mel Bernstein, Vice President and Dean of the Faculty for Arts, Sciences and Technology, provided the group of Jumbos with an informative update of news from the Hill. Also in attendance from the Hill were Gary Lowe, Senior Director, Development, for Arts, Sciences and Technology, and Jack Moynihan, Associate Director of Alumni Relations.

WEST FLORIDA Thanks to Sumner Hoffman, A43, M46, G69, and Charlotte Laven, J43, the West Florida Tufts Alliance brought together alumni, friends and family at the Palm Aire Country Club, Sarasota, on December 7, to hear Dr. Arland Christ-Janer speak. Dr Christ-Janer, the interim director of the Ringling Center of Arts for Florida State University, spoke about the cultural arts scene in Sarasota. ATLANTA On November 4, members of the Atlanta Tufts Club enjoyed an evening of wine tasting at the home of Joyce Gelzer, J64, and her husband, Frank. It was a wonderful opportunity to sample wines from seven countries and hear expert advice on selecting fine wines from guest speaker Don Reddicks, co-founder of the Atlanta Wine School and chairman of the Greater Atlanta chapter of the American Wine Society. CAPE COD The Cape Cod Tufts Club held an event on November 18 at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Dr. Amy Bower lectured on Redsox Goes To Sea, about planning an oceanographic research cruise to the Indian Ocean. Lunch was prepared by Roland of Falmouth.

PALM BEACH The Palm Beach Tufts Alliance hosted an event on November 26, at the home of Marvin Birger, A49, and his wife, Carolyn, featuring Professor Jodi Magness, Tufts Department of Classics and Art History. The lecture, The Archaeology of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls, was enjoyed by all the Jumbos in attendance.

SAN FRANCISCO The San Francisco Tufts Alliance held another of their now famous Loud Hours at the Tied House on September 6. Leader Dave Backman, A94, Melina Jampolis, J92, M96, and the rest of the group enjoyed a wonderful night of reminiscing and partying. The San Francisco Tufts Alliance took in the San Jose Sharks vs. the Boston Bruins hockey game on October 14, and although the Bruins lost, 5 to 2, a fun time was had by all. The evening began with a pre-game wine and cheese reception at the home of Melina Jampolis, J92, M96, and concluded with a visit from Sharkie, the San Jose mascot.
