In recognition of its leadership and innovation in civic engagement, Tufts received the 2015 Higher Education Civic Engagement Award from the Washington Center and the New York Life Foundation.

“Civic engagement has been a signature value of Tufts University since its founding, and we believe, now more than ever, that higher education has a responsibility to educate active citizens,” said President Anthony P. Monaco, who received the award on October 5, along with Alan D. Solomont, A70, dean of Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Tufts was one of five colleges and universities selected for the honor from among more than one hundred nominations. Created in 2009, the award celebrates higher education institutions that achieve sustainable civic impact.

“Tufts University is a shining example of how universities are taking the traditional curriculum model and incorporating initiatives that teach self-awareness, community engagement, and lifelong leadership skills,” said Mike Smith, president of the Washington Center, which provides students from around the world with opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C., for academic credit.
