Medical Scholarship and Fellowship Fund Created

His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, hosted a black-tie dinner on May 9 to celebrate the establishment of a new scholarship and fellowship fund for medical students and medical researchers.

The memorable evening at St. James Palace in London marked the creation of the Alexander Papamarkou/ Prince of Wales Medical Scholarship and Fellowship Fund, which will provide financial support for graduate medical students and researchers from both the United States and the United Kingdom who wish to pursue studies at Tufts School of Medicine and its affiliated Boston hospitals. The Prince of Wales was a dear friend of Alexander Papamarkou and the Prince of Wales Foundation made a generous contribution to the creation of the fund. The Foundation in the United States advances health care, aids disadvantaged young people and supports educational initiatives.

"The Papamarkou Fund stands as a significant tribute to the scientific and humanitarian contribution of both men," said John Harrington, Dean of the Medical School. "We are honored to have this opportunity to assist highly promising young medical doctors and researchers to advance 21st medicine."

The 60 distinguished guests included King Constantinos and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece. Trustee Michael Jaharis, chair of the Medical/Sackler Board of Overseers and a close personal friend of Papamarkou, Papamarkou's sister, Lisa Papamarkou Jewell, and her husband, Keith, were instrumental in raising $1 million to establish the fund in Papamarkou's memory.

Papamarkou was an investment banker who was generous in his support of the arts, education and medicine. Just prior to his death, he endowed the Plutarch Papamarkou Chair of Microbiology and Infectious Disease at Rockefeller University, in honor of his father, a distinguished Greek physician and surgeon. His philanthropy also includes the Harissios Papamarkou Chair in Education at the Library of Congress in honor of his grandfather, a prominent Greek educator, as well as the Central Park Conservancy and an endowment of the New York Philharmonic in memory of his mother.
